A Psychoanalytic Approach to Treating Chronic Pain Syndromes Panel The Mind and Body in Pain: Two Responses to a Case Presentation Division 39 Spring Meeting: Atlanta, April 7, 2016

2015

On Saturday, December 5, 2015, Dr. Eric Sherman taught a mini course, "An Introduction to a Psychoanalytically-Based Treatment Approach to Psychophysiologic (Psychosomatic) Pain Disorders to members of The Psychoanalytic Society of the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.

This mini course focused on the recognition of psychophysiologic pain syndromes, as well as understanding their development from a psychoanalytic perspective. Dr. Sherman demonstrated how all too often physicians who treat pain, psychotherapists, and even people struggling with musculoskeletal pain erroneously attribute physical problems exclusively to anatomical defects, thereby "medicalizing" them. This failure to recognize the crucial role psychodynamic factors play in the development of persistent musculoskeletal pain undermines the effectiveness of clinicians and inadvertently deprives people of beneficial treatment.

Dr. Sherman's presentation was well-received and he was invited back to give this mini course next fall.
